More About JA of PEI ...

Junior Achievement is an international not-for-profit organization supported by business and industry, dedicated to teaching young people about the principles and dynamics of business and the Canadian and global economic systems.

Junior Achievement was founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, a U.S. industrialist who recognized the need for practical business education among city high school students. Junior Achievement was introduced to Canada in 1955. A Canadian Chamber of Commerce centennial project was instrumental in establishing the Junior Achievement of Canada (JACAN) organization in 1967.

Junior Achievement of PEI was formed in 1985 and delivers JA programs to schools in communities all across the province with the support of local volunteers, businesses and the education community. The office recruits and trains volunteers, builds partnerships within participating communities and coordinates marketing initiatives. PEI's provincial office for Junior Achievement is located at Holland College in Charlottetown.

Junior Achievement's educational programs span grades 3- 12. These programs supply students with the tools and skills needed to increase their self confidence and sufficiency, as well as providing an understanding and appreciation of free market economics. The programs are tailored to meet the diverse needs of Canadian students coast to coast. Junior Achievement programs currently offered in Prince Edward Island are Our Community: Needs, Jobs, Tools (Gr.3). Our Country: Innovation & Technology (Gr. 4). Our Business World (Gr. 5), Economics of Staying in School (Gr. 8), The Company Program - A Student Venture (available extra-curricular for Grades 9 - 12 and in-school for Grades 10 - 12).

Mission Statement:

"To inspire and educate young Canadians to experience free enterprise, understand business and economics and develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills."

Vision:

We will be recognized as vital to the success of our youth in reaching their potential through partnership with business and educators in the delivery of relevant business learning experiences by inspired volunteers.

During the past five years, Junior Achievement of PEI has realized an impressive growth in student reach, and now reaches between 3,000 and 4,000 PEI students each year with their business education programs.
