Program Description

Understanding business is essential to the success of young people today and tomorrow. Through Junior Achievement, elementary school children develop a positive attitude about business and economics, while strengthening interpersonal and communication skills.

Our Business World is based on four, one hour, interactive lessons for students at the Grade 5 level. The four lessons are as follows:

    Lesson One:
  • Students explore the variety of skills and resources necessary to start a business and the common forms of business ownership used in Canada.

    Lesson Two:
  • Students identify several typical management decisions and focus on one very important class of decisions - hiring new employees. Students learn how to fill out a job application and have the opportunity to role-play the interview process.

    Lesson Three:
  • The classroom is turned into a production facility and students take a hands-on approach to learning by producing Business Basics pens. This exercise helps demonstrate the impacts quality and productivity can have on a business.

    Lesson Four:
  • An introduction to different aspects of Marketing. Students explore pricing and advertising and then work in groups to develop their own advertisements to sell a Business Basics pen. Creativity and enthusiasm are the key words to describe the classroom in this lesson.
The Our Business World program sets students on the discovery to their important roles as individuals, workers and consumers in the economy. The students' energy is contagious and holds much promise for the future of PEI business.

Volunteer Role:

Working in partnership with the Teacher, the Consultant shares his/her expertise and experience with the students while delivering the program through materials provided by Junior Achievement. The typical role of the Volunteer is as follows:

Volunteer Skills, Attitudes and Knowledge:

  • Business background an asset
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate and enjoy working with youth
  • Flexible, patient and understanding
  • Commitment to the goals of Junior Achievement

Volunteer Benefits:

Ask any JA volunteer and they will tell you “You gain more than you give!” From professional skill building to personal development and reward, becoming a Junior Achievement volunteer, or expanding your participation is a “win-win” situation. Some benefits include:

  • Increased self confidence
  • Improved written and oral communication skills, time management and organizational skills
