Program Description

Junior Achievement offers a highly effective program for grade 8 students that stresses the importance of staying in school, a decision that will ultimately have a major impact on a student's economic success. Learning by doing is the key. Through hands-on exercises and practical problem solving, students process economic concepts and make them relevant to their lives.

Economics of Staying in School (ESIS) focuses students on a series of powerful lessons that empower students to make effective educational decisions while exploring future career opportunities. In four, one hour lessons guided by the expertise and experience of their business volunteers, students define success in personal terms, begin to understand the costs of living independently and focus on career planning steps. They develop a budget for a young, single person living on their own and then explore their earning potential at different levels of education and experience. The program concludes with a Trivia game that tests students' knowledge of the four lessons.

The Volunteer Role

The ESIS business volunteer shares his/her expertise and experience with the students while delivering the program through the materials provided by Junior Achievement. Again and again, we have heard from our business volunteers that teaching JA programs to the youth of our community is an enriching experience. In return for helping students to understand the benefits of an education, you will return to your own place of business with your presentation and communication skills enhanced and a great deal of satisfaction knowing you have fostered a positive relationship between our youth and business.

Special thanks to program partners Aliant, Citigroup Foundation, RBC Financial Group, and CIBC.
